These books have either been gratefully received as presents (thank you!), or purchased while buying presents for others. They are an eclectic mix of science related books, from what feels like a study textbook on climate change to a heartfelt story of a woman working in tech. I’m looking forward to reading every single one them, and part of my idea for this blog is to provide a review and reflection of the books I read.
I do enjoy reading, but sometimes find myself not wanting to make time for it. Or at least, not making time for readings I want to commit to. But I find time to look on twitter, often read the newspaper and random articles on the internet. So as well as this blog having the purpose of making reviews, I also want to make time for things that count. Increasingly, Twitter has really lost its appeal. It is great to connect with other researchers and find out what they are up to, but at a cost of witnessing some awful dialogue from tech owners and bad science. There must be a better way for scientists to communicate and connect online, but I’m not sure yet what that is (mastodon, blogs?). So, my intention for 2023 is more time readings books and articles, and connecting with others using the interest but much less so through social media. I don’t know how this experiment will go. But maybe something more positive will happen, maybe I’ll (at least feel) more productive, and maybe these words might have some use for others.
Happy New Year to everyone!
